Fighting the bake sale ban!!!

Please join students from around the city to protest the new regulation on bake sales on Friday, Nov. 13 from 2-6 p.m. in front of City Hall. The protest is being organized by seniors from LaGuardia High School, and we invite anyone and everyone to come. (find the protest on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=157082772513&index=1)

Department of Education regulation A-812 states that only approved foods can be sold in schools until 6 p.m., and no outside food can be sold during mealtimes. The regulation is so restrictive it is commonly referred to as a ban on bake sales. As Jennifer Medina said in a recent New York Times article, “There will be no cupcakes. No chocolate cake and no carrot cake. According to According to New York City’s latest regulations, not even zucchini bread makes the cut.”

Since the bake sale ban applies to lunch periods, and LaGuardia has five lunch periods during the day, it is virtually impossible for students to buy something. In the past, LaGuardia clubs and teams, along with those of many other high schools, have relied on bake sales for close to 100% of their fundraising. Students were not forewarned about this ban so that bake sales could be phased out over time while other methods of fundraising were introduced. As reported in the Village Voice, two high school seniors are organizing a petition against the ban. There are also Facebook groups being created in protest.

It’s not just students who are protesting the regulation. The Village Voice quotes Beacon English teacher Sarah Fink: “There is no budget for after-school programs. Bake sales are pure profit. The ingredients are cheap, and the students can do it themselves.”

The Department of Education does not provide the necessary funding for the clubs, teams, and extracurriculars which enrich schools and students’ lives. Selective colleges and are asking for increasing involvement in these activities. If the DOE provided adequate funding, these regulations would be acceptable; as it stands, they are not.

I hope to see you on Friday, Nov. 13. The event can be found on Facebook (you must have a Facebook account to view it). You can also email me or post a comment with any questions.

homemade pizza

So 5 litres of milk, a day of curds and whey later and then some serious kneading after work tonight and I have managed to make pizza and mozzarella from scratch. Two days work to make a simple and cheap meal is not exactly time efficient, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

On Sunday I indulged myself with a cheese making workshop, where I learnt to make mozzarella, a couple of soft creamy cheese (one which I will turn into a brie, the other a washed rind) and ricotta. The cheese making process in a magical one, turning a enormous amount of milk into the smallest amount of cheese takes a bit of science and whole lot of love, care and attention. You'll love your cheese more than you do your partner or children by the end of the day.

Then you bring them home and they need tending to with brine solution before the maturing can begin, a secondary process that can take at least another three weeks. Next time you are in the deli wondering how they can justify $80 a kilo or more for a decent cheese, the answer is that it is totally justified. Magic doesn't come cheap.

I got seven fist size balls of mozzarella from five litres of top quality, full fat milk. It takes about 4 hours to make all up and I was taught by Giorgio of That's Amore Cheese in Melbourne a legend!

The milk is first gently heated and the culture added. Once the culture begins to work the curd separates from the whey and you can eventually turn the curds into mozzarella through a warming, mixing, waiting and stretching process. Patience is required.

I brought home the whey and will be turning that into ricotta over the next couple of days, nothing gets wasted.

What better dish to cook with my homemade mozzarella than homemade pizza?

Pizza dough is pretty easy to do and anything homemade always tastes special.

This quantity makes enough for six personal pizza bases.

1 Cup '00' Plain Flour
1/2 Cup Water
2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1 Teaspoon Salt
Make a well in the flour on your worktop and pour in the oil and little bit of the water, mix gently round with your finger. Work in a little more water and add a second finger. Continue to add the water, adding more fingers until you have added all the water and are using you whole hand. You shouldn't have to get both hands messy as there won't be enough dough to warrant both getting involved. Continue working and kneading the dough for at least ten minutes, maybe fifteen. A few practice attempts and you'll get the hang of it. You end up just knowing when it's done.

Leave the dough to rest for thirty minutes before spliting it in six and rolling out. You need the oven really hot, 250c is perfect.

For the tomato sauce I combined a couple of cloves of garlic that had been fried off in olive oil with a couple of tablespoons of tomato paste and a lunchtime tin of tuna with sun-dried tomatoes and herbs.

Thinly slice the mozzarella lay on the babies, cook for about 4 or 5 minutes, serve with beer

The Baker's Falls in the Horton Plains gets its water from the Belihul Oya. It is close to World's End. The icy waters glisten in the sunshine amid a backdrop of mountain terrain and deep valleys and the patna through which you traverse give it contrast. If you are lucky you may see the rare black monkey and rhododendrons in bloom.

Discovered by Sir Samuel Baker and a good stopover on your way to the World's end.
» Bambarakanda Ella

Sri Lanka is blessed with over one hundred waterfalls. The tallest is the Bambarakande Falls which cascades down 263 metres like liquid light. It is only four miles away from the Colombo-Bandarawela road in a forest glade, but it is not visited often, though well worth the trip.

Bambarakande is taller than the famous Diyaluma falls which is only 220 metres but thought to be the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The Diyaluma or Diya Haluma collects its water from the Poonagala Oya in the vicinity of Koslanda and Wellawaya. Located six miles from Koslanda and 13 miles from Wellawaya, its waters originate from the Mahakande Pass in Koslanda. You can see this waterfall if you stop a while on your way to Haputale and detour.

Due to the geological formation of Sri Lanka, the central highlands are surrounded by peneplains, plateaus and valleys. Rainfall sends a large volume of water hurtling down the precipitous edges of the highland mass. The up thrust millions of years ago has caused several peneplains to form, the highest being well over 6000 ft. It is in this area that the water is collected when there are showers and flows down along tributaries down the mountain slopes.

» Bopath Ella

"Bopath Ella", not like many of the others of her kind , finds her abode in a busy surrounding in the village called Devipahala off Kuruwita on A4 High Level road close to Ratnapura. Being within 3 hours driving distance from the capital, it thus claims the honour of having the highest turn-over of enthusiasts seeking respite from the grimy and monotonous town life .Nevertheless, it has the notorious reputation of devouring its visitors off and on who , attracted by the surroundings ,indulge in over-enjoyment .Here again, the falls take the shape of a "Bo" leave ( "Bo" tree is a sacred tree here ) from which the name has been derived.

REVIEW: SUN 8 Inch Digital Photo Frame

Taiwan based SUN Group are not a well known brand, but in fact are one of the leading manufacturers of digital photo frames. Most of their products are exported to the US and Europe markets. This, their 8 inch model, is their most popular model so I opened the box with some anticipation.

The first impression is that this is a very well designed product with a solid construction. The mounting options and stand configuration is the best design I have seen on a digital frame: 4 screw mount holes, 2 hook mount holes and an extendable stand, all of which can be used to orient the frame either horizontally or vertically.

The user interface is of the standard type used on many models of digital photo frames and is not hard to pick up by trial and error. The user manual is also quite good for those of us who are more technically challenged.

The feature of the calendar, clock and alarm is definitely a bonus and the ability to schedule the frame to turn on an off at certain times of the day is also something that could see it being used in a retail / advertising environment with great effect.

Overall, I can definitely recommend this frame - the LCD screen display is excellent and the user interface and features are certainly top of the line. If you're in the market for a digital frame and want something more than a bargain basement model, then buy this product and you won't be disappointed

Hello friends! Merry Christmas to all of you and I hope you have a wonderful day!

I made it home to Vancouver two days ago only to be welcomed by an unusual winter sight - snow. The west doesn't usually get more than a few days of the white stuff a year, so this winter storm is shocking and causing chaos across the city!

Strangely, I feel I brought the snow with me. My final moments in Korea had me in the airport, saying goodbye to friends and to a wonderful country, and as I made my way onto the plane, snow began to fall hard. The flight had already been delayed for two hours, and now we had to wait again as the planes wings were de-iced.

Once away, the flight was very smooth. Even the landing in a sun-drenched Vancouver was smooth. It wasn't until we taxied to the gate that we were delayed again due to the gangway (thing that connects the plane to the gate) was frozen. After an hour and a bit of waiting, we were finally let off the plane.

For me, the delays were no problem, but for passengers connecting to other flights, this turned into a nightmare as flights were missed, delayed or canceled. I hear thousands had to sleep in the airport - I just hope the Torontonian I was sitting beside got home.

And now, I am sitting at Starbucks (no internet at home), staring at the snow seriously coming down. This will mean a smaller Christmas dinner tonight (cousins/aunts/uncles can't make it through the snow) - which is the first time ever I believe. But I am thankful to be home with my family for Christmas, and not stuck in snowed-in travel hell.

Anyway, here I am rambling, when what I really wanted to do in this post was to wish everyone online a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

Be safe in your travels and lets enjoy this rare snow while we have it! Snowman time!

life in color

I've never seen life in black and white. The color cast off all objects and experiences is too tangible to ignore- I prefer to experience life through a kaleidoscope of hues and values. I remember when I realized that perhaps color was more important to me than most my age. When glancing into my friends' closets as a teen, I saw clothes in black, grey, white... a color here and there. Whereas my wardrobe was more suited to Punky Brewster (still is).

What is it about color? Is it the tangible effect it has on our moods? To me it has an intoxicating effect on the eyes- spreading through the body until all is left warm, happy, content.

I love to live my life in color

I've had these sitting on my side for some time now, but I've just not had the time to write up a post... that and again I've lost my camera, so apologise for the poor photos as I've had to resort to my phone.

This is the latest lot of purchases from HelloStoreUSA. Taking advantage of the pre-ordering that was available before Christmas I ordered a selectiogn of photoss and a Everyday Zekkocho!! tshirt.
With the photos I decided that I need to focus on members that I love but I just don't enough merchandise of. Chinami, Hagiity and Ayaya, all members that I just can't get enough of, but I don't think with any of them I have more than 8 photos of each. My lack of merchandise for Ayaya still shocks me, but with her latest DVD turning up in the post yesterday (well, I say turn up... I had to drive to the post depot after they delayed it for 2 weeks and pay them additonal £20 in tax and handling for the pleasure) my collection of her concerts is now building up, next on the list is to hunt down her PBs. Chinami, another member where I really need to grab her PB, but until then I'm going to work on building up my photos. She looks so amazing in these photos, much like Chisato it's great to see her grow out that boyish look she once had, she's just so stunning now. Haggity, or bobble head as quite a few people I have on MSN are calling her XD this girl is so cute, oddly aside from the group series of photos all the photos of Maimai are this larger size, not that I'm complaining :D

Lastly, because it's been awhile a Morning Musume photo set from the Nine Smile concert. I really love this photoset, I love the outfits so bright!! And metalic-ness of the photos adds an odd something to them. My last photoset with Koharu in them :'(

2010 - what! The future! We are in it!
This one is going to be fantastic. I can feel it.

I thought as a fun little game, I'd list up some highlights from this last decade, in which I went from age 15 to age 25. (possibly the strangest realization I've had in a while) And I thought 5 to 15 was big.

2000: Sophomore/Junior year of high school: I go to extra 5am practices to fight my way back onto Juniors/Seniors swim team. Grown up Cindy will look back on this with awe.
2001: Junior/Senior year of high school: I survive AP American History/my first dance concert since age 4. AP history exam yielded a 5, dance concert yielded really embarrassing video tapes.
2002: Senior year of high school/Freshman year of college: The memories are endless. Also the year I met Jess. Epic.
2003: Freshman/Sophomore year of college: Why was I so scared of college? I hate calculus and physics. I love everything else.
2004: Sophomore/Junior year of college: ROME. Life changing. And then studio. Sleep habit changing.
2005: Junior/Senior year of college: Studio is all consuming but completely fantastic. Solid solid friendships are born at 3am while sharing drafting dots. And Marie Antoinette the cat supersedes Jess as the coolest thing in my life.
2006: Senior year of college/Year one of grad school: In the same year I decide I don't want to be an architect, I go to Spain, I get into grad school, I go to Disney World, and then I go back to Rome. And then I move into DC. And start classes again. And start working at Paper Source.
2007: Year one/Year two of grad school: Realize I have found what I love. Let's go save some buildings! At some point or another, work three part time jobs in addition to grad school. A girl's gotta support her fancy urban lifestyle.
2008: Year two of grad school/Year one of real life: But I was just 15 yesterday! Graduate for good. Get a real live full time job. Downsize to one part time job.
2009: Real life: So it is. I manage to bring the Rome tally up to 3 and then spend the rest of the year celebrating with the gang I've been with since good ol' 2000.

And here we are! Let's bring on the next 10 years!

It's time to wake up and spring back into action. The world around us is coming to life again and now is the time to renew, recharge and freshen up the world around us.

Soorat Nikhar Jaati hai

tasty pizza

Tony Gemignani knows about pizza. He makes pizza and he teaches others how to create pizza.
I call Tony, the Amabassador of Pizza. He travels the world giving pizza demos. Let's face it, pizza just oozes out of this guy.

He recently opened a new pizzeria / pizza school in San Francisco. And he makes the best pizza in San Francisco. From all of the reports I've seen, it is surpassing all expectations.

According to their website:

A small pizzeria in Naples, Italy is the inspiration behind Tony Gemignani's story for Tony's Pizza Napoletana. A fullfillment in his ever growing passion for pizza drew him to self content when he first tried an authentic Neapolitan pizza.

Since then he was determined to learn this art of pizza making and one day open a restaurant like no other. Growing up, Tony worked by his mother's side, learning valuable skills he would later implement in operating a successful restaurant. Tony learned the creativity involved in preparing hand crafted dishes, only to include the finest ingredients straight from the heart of

Today has been quite the downer in many ways. Besides finding out that my own cat had to be put down this morning (RIP Lutzy), yet another shocking blow has been delivered…

Sadly, the show that we’ve all come to know and love, Best Week Ever, has been officially canceled. We just got word of the news about an hour ago, and have been in a mournful state since. The show that turned itself into a household phrase brought a lot of laughter into people’s lives, not to mention paved the way for many of today’s most well known comedians.

The folks that worked on the show were some of the smartest, funniest, kindest people you could find. It was a real creative collaboration from start to finish, and in between hard work and late hours you could find real friendships and dedication. It goes without saying that each and every person who helped make Best Week Ever the success it became will move on to even bigger and brighter opportunities (albeit with many less rainbow transitions). And they did it all for you, the fans, who were the real people that helped put this show on the map.

On the bright side, we want to assure you that BestWeekEver.tv will continue cranking out breaking news, interviews, viral videos and all the pop culture gossip the Internet is currently set to handle. The blog will be here to nurture you, comfort you, hold your hand, and be the footsteps in your digital sand.

Once again, from all of us to all of you, we want to take this time to thank everyone for continuing to support the show through life’s ups and downs. And yes, I might be a little more emotional than usual because, well sh*t, my cat died.

It seems like the trend this spring for luxury watch brands is to focus on paying homage to watch parts. Back in March we reported that Rama Swiss Watch (RSS) released 25 limited edition watches which pay homage to the tourbillon. Now Fossil has released a line of watches that feature and pay homage to the chronograph.

This watch is one of our favorites among the collection, the Fossil FS4446 Sport Chronograph which has a black oversized dial, 3 sub dials, black case and bracelet and a low cost

On New Year’s Eve, my wife went grocery shopping and came home with steaks for dinner.

Steaks are always welcome, but they were raw at that point, so I asked how she was going to cook them.

“Either boiled or fried” was the response.

Boiled? Ugh. No thanks. I’m sure it would make the meat safe to eat, but that’s just not right. Save the boiling for hot dogs. Although . . . I usually just microwave those.

Fried? Maybe, but a steak deserves better than that

Reverse engineering with okteta

In the last week I was hacking on OpenBSC to make GSM 12.21 Software Load usable for the ip.access nanoBTS. The difficulta was not within GSM 12.21 as Harald had it implemented for the Siemens BS11 BTS. The difficulty was that some messages need to contain paramaters and these come directly from the firmware file which ultimately means that one needs to understand the firmware file format to extract these. okteta came to rescue me and it was extremely good at doing this.

Okteta has not only the hex view one expects but also some useful utilities. Selecting a couple of bytes and the "Decoding Table" can tell you the different values in different endinanesses. So whenever I thought this is a file length, I would look into the "Decoding table", select bytes and see how many I selected and if it could make sense, it can calculate various checksums over a selection.

Thanks a lot for Okteta, it safed my day!

New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. ~Hamilton Wright Mabie

The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months! ~Edward Payson Powell

Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;

The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to. ~P.J. O'Rourke

Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past. ~Henry Ward Beecher
